Taking Your Chooks Home

Congratulations! You now have your own friendly chickens and great eggs for the family.

Transport

Bring a large box or crate with a secure lid with you to transport your pullets home. Dog and cat carriers are also suitable for a few hens. Cardboard boxes should have plenty of large holes for ventilation.

Housing

Make sure you have your new coop secure and ready for your hens when they get home. It needs to be weather, predator and vermin proof and have good ventilation. Provide at least one nest box per 4 birds to minimize broken eggs.

Rice hulls make great bedding material for your coop. It is insect resistant, spreads easily and does not pack down. Rice hulls also let moisture drain through to the bottom of the hulls which keeps the top layers dry. Old rice hull bedding is great in the compost heap and makes excellent fertiliser for the garden. Keep bedding fresh and clean. Thoroughly clean the whole coop once a month.

Feeding

Feed on a minimum of 17% protein laying mash or pellets. This provides your chickens with all the vitamins, trace elements and minerals needed for a healthy, nutritional diet.

Always ensure that birds have access to plenty of clean, fresh drinking water. Water is necessary to produce eggs and extremely important in warm weather otherwise birds will dehydrate and die.

Occasional treats provide some variety and enrichment. Chickens love watermelon slices, they are a refreshing summer treat. They are delicious frozen and so are ice blocks of chopped strawberries.
